This delightful plaster model was based on originals in a French private collection. The Canova workshop in Rome contained these.
Boxed with a product card and with felt underneath for protective purposes.
In the early 19th century a new interest in modern sculpture in the classical style developed. This centred on the work of the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. The original lions were created by the Italian artist, Antonio Canova (1757-1822). The Monumental tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome incorporated these.
The 6th Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth House commissioned two lions (crouching and sleeping) for Chatsworth House.
